Reduce Bandwidth Consumption for Video Surveillance (LAN Environment)

1.Encoding Settings

Adopt H.265 / H.265+ instead of H.264. Use VBR (Variable Bit Rate) mode. Lower frame rate to 10–15 fps for non-critical areas. Extend GOP/I-frame interval to 50–100. Enable 3D noise reduction to avoid bitrate surge at night.

2. Dual-stream Deployment

Main stream for local NVR recording. Sub stream for client preview and video wall cycling. Do not pull main stream for routine viewing.

3. LAN Transmission Optimization

Use multicast if multiple terminals view the same camera channel. Enable IGMP Snooping on switches to prevent multicast flooding. Terminate unused video streams to avoid persistent traffic. Limit concurrent preview channels to prevent port congestion. Isolate surveillance traffic from office network via VLAN.

4. Recording Strategy

Enable motion detection recording for general zones instead of 24/7 continuous recording.

5. Common Pitfalls

Avoid CBR mode in LAN. Do not shorten I-frame interval unnecessarily. Disable unnecessary dynamic OSD overlays which increase bitrate.
